It is no secret that the key to healthy hair starts with the scalp. The more our scalp is saturated with product build-up and dead skin cells, the more difficult it is for our hair to grow long and healthy. For this reason, scalp massagers come in handy.

If you’re a fan of hair care products, then you are probably familiar with them. Scalp massagers come in different forms with some designed specifically for dry hair, while some of them work best in the shower. Chances are, you’ve also probably seen or used one of those antenna-like massagers in middle school when they were all the rage back then.

This article will look at the advantages of using a scalp massager to promote hair growth and its overall health benefits to our crowning glory.

What is a Scalp Massager?

These handheld, brush-like devices that work to stimulate and exfoliate the scalp are what we refer to as scalp massagers. They are usually made with soft silicone or synthetic bristles, either manual or battery-powered, and they are used to massage the scalp and remove dry skin. Recently, these massagers have surged in popularity which makes you wonder what all the fuss is about. Is a scalp massager really more effective to use than just your fingertips?

A typical scalp massage only uses our fingers and is often done in the shower. With the right technique, it’s just as relaxing as having a back or a foot massage. But with a finger scalp massage, the pressure is a lot gentler than when using a scalp massager.

As a result, some dead skin cells and flakes will remain behind, which means your hair won’t come out as clean. But with scalp massagers, the effect can mimic the pressure of your fingertips, increase your scalp’s blood flow, as well as effectively remove more dry skin.

Scalp Massager for Hair Growth

A small study (1) conducted in 2016 concluded that a regular scalp massage can lead to thicker hair. Nine healthy men would receive a 4-minute scalp massage with a scalp massager every day for the next 24 weeks. Study results have shown that performing consistent hair massage leads to hair thickness for all the participants of the study.

Another study (2) in 2019 supported the findings that doing scalp massage twice a day can also improve hair loss. This was based on responses from 340 participants who also followed a routine with specific instructions on scalp massage.

The self-reported findings also show that 69% of participants saw an improvement in their alopecia (3) in response to doing a scalp massage regimen.

Although further research is still needed regarding the benefits of scalp massage and how it impacts hair growth, Los Angeles-based dermatologist Jessica Wu (4) recommends the use of scalp massagers for those who are trying to achieve fuller hair.

Scalp massages also help in increasing hair thickness by stretching and stimulating the living hair follicle cells. As a result, the blood vessels beneath the skin dilate, leading to hair growth.

That said, let’s have a look at some of the scalp massager benefits for our crowning glory and why it might be a good idea to incorporate it into your daily routine.

Helps in Reducing Scalp Tension

You may not be aware, but scalp tension is a real problem. It happens when you get stressed and end up touching your scalp. Also, unconsciously pulling your hair strands, ultimately results in hair loss.

In general, stress is not a good thing for our bodies. Our hair is not an exemption from its effects. So take the time and give your scalp a much-needed massage at the end of your working day. You will see that your head muscles will be much more relaxed. This makes the use of a scalp massager more beneficial for you over time.

Helps in Losing Dead Skin Cells

A scalp massager is also an excellent exfoliating tool for your hair. If you notice flakes falling on your pillowcase, or when you scratch your head, use a scalp massager to help remove the dry skin. It is recommended to use it regularly or weekly depending on your schedule.

For best results, give it a more thorough massage by doing circular motions. To properly clear those unwanted dead skin cells on your scalp.

Helps in Increasing Blood Flow in Your Hair Follicle

Whether it is an electric scalp massager or a silicone scalp massager. Using it can also increase blood flow around your scalp which can result in hair growth. Moreover, you can either do this in the morning or in the evening, whichever suits your schedule. Make sure to incorporate it into your daily routine to fully reap its benefits on your hair and scalp.

Note: You only use an electric scalp massager on dry hair. If you want to do this in the shower, there are also other types of scalp massagers made for wet use.

Helps in Absorbing Products Better to Your Scalp

If you are using scalp treatments or applying deep conditioning treatments, using a scalp massager can be a great tool. As mentioned earlier, scalp massaging makes our blood vessels dilate leading to increased blood circulation. It allows your hair to easily absorb any serum or treatments, making the product more effective for your scalp.

Bottomline: Scalp Massagers and their Benefits

The research about scalp massage and its cure for hair loss might still be relatively new, but it shows promising results to promote hair growth. You can either use your fingertips to massage your scalp or use a device such as an electric scalp massager, silicone scalp massager, or even a vibrating scalp massager.

That said, there are so many scalp massagers you can choose from depending on your preference. Some of them are designed for shower use while you apply your favorite shampoo or serum, to clean and massage your scalp at the same time. Also, there are scalp massagers that are more versatile and can be used in other parts of the body to relieve muscle tensions.

Remember to talk to your doctor if you notice other symptoms besides hair loss to get the proper treatment needed.
